In April 2014 the school has been fortunate enough to secure the visit of top children’s author Alan Gibbons. He will be speaking to year 9 & 10 pupils. Alan has won many book awards, amongst which are the Blue Peter Award 2000, the Catalyst Award and RED award. He was also shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal in 2001/3 and twice for the Booktrust Teenage Prize. Alan has also appeared on various TV programmes.
He is a full time writer and independent educational consultant and his books are hard-hitting realistic stories that cover relevant and current issues such as racial tension, guns, and the war on terror.
Pupils will have the opportunity to buy signed copies of Alan’s books on the day of the visit, priced £6.99 each, if they wish.
His school visits have been praised by OFSTED who said; ‘(In schools visited by Alan Gibbons) Pupils’ achievement is very good. This is due to the effective deployment of the talented Author in Residence, and the focused teaching of skills in dedicated writing lessons’.
